Britain means business!

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Export Week

As I was browsing the British Embassy website for advice on entry taxes in Spain for my ‘66 Classic’ alcoholic key lime pie drink, I came across UKTI. Trailing it back to the South West office, I decided to get in touch to see how they could help. The friendly lady I spoke to suggested meeting one of their ITAs (International Trade Adviser). Intrigued - I agreed.

A whirlwind of enthusiasm ultimately descended in the form of Hilary Charman. It soon became clear that this was a very different operation. Hilary suggested I attend a couple of seminars about emerging markets. This is the great thing about UKTI - they get to the point and quickly.

The first seminar was about Mexico, somewhere I knew very little about. The seminar was very well run and included a video presentation from John Pearson, UKTI’s head in Mexico. I was so taken with his talk that I emailed him a presentation on my company straight away. I was surprised to receive a reply the next morning, with a promise to put me in touch with a member of the Food & Drink team.

In no time at all, I found myself showcasing my product at an important event at the Ambassador’s residence in Mexico. I also had commercial meetings set up with prospective importer distributors during my one-week visit.

It was my first export mission and I was on my own; but not for long. During my stay, the staff at the British Embassy couldn’t have been friendlier, or more helpful; encouraging my mission objectives and a genuine passionate about their role in helping British companies succeed in their country.

It is tricky getting samples into Mexico, but the Consulate in Guadalajara produced a letter in Spanish, to facilitate my way through customs. I was a little nervous stepping into Mexico City airport late on a Sunday night, but producing my letter to immigration was like handing over a Royal warrant of appointment! Customs only required a cursory look at my samples of liquor & chocolates before waving me on my way.

The event at the Ambassador’s residence was a memorable occasion. To see my little company’s brand on the main display for official photographs alongside multi-national companies was something almost of a dream. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the guests for my product and the unique way it is served - an alcoholic (cream liqueur) version of key lime pie in a chocolate tea-cup!

I received warm, courteous welcomes wherever I went in Mexico, meeting prospective importers, distributors, shipping agents and retailers. But the real eye-opener was the level of interest in Britain and admiration of British products.

Success does not come easily….or quickly, but the most important lesson I’ve learned so far is to emphasise British authenticity, which is highly regarded across the globe.

Business is GREAT BRITAIN! So let’s show the world that Britain really DOES mean business.

If you've been inspired by Paul's story, why not attend an event in UKTI's Export Week, running from 11 - 15 November?  You'll find events that are suitable for new and expanding exporters.   And plenty of export inspiration on the GREAT Business website
